Out Exploring Guangzhou

Today was a day free from any official meetings or paperwork and it was a great chance for the 9 of us to do some exploring.  We couldn't think of a better way for Fei to get to know us...a good old fashion exploration trip in a city where the only one of us who speaks the language is 2 years old...turned out just like it sounds - great :)

Here is the summary and then the pictures to prove most of it...

Leaving for a day on the town.
  • A French store in China that was like Walmart on steroids with moving ramps for your carts that took you from floor to floor.  Very clean and very international.
  • Kids (including Chris & Fei) loved the sea food area of this store...live turtles, eels, frogs, fish, squid and the list goes on.  Also fish heads that were still moving...TJ was up close and personal with the butchering staff.
  • Fun cab rides (the cabs are very reasonable and regulated in Guangzhou).  They only have one rule...only kids and women can sit in front, not men.  Ellie and TJ got to sit in the front seat of a car for the first time in their life while in China - they loved it.
  • Lunch at Lucy's Bar on Shamian Island - This is a cute little oasis set up like a 50's diner with license plates from around the US, pictures of American celebrities & movies, and serving western food including hamburgers and fries....a fun little break from our food adventures.
  • Bartering for a few survivors....you should see the kids eyes as dad goes back and forth in negotiations.
  • All the while, Fei is beginning to be more interested in the entire group as she is now preferring to travel as a group.  Most of her communication continues with her eyes and she is able to tell you if she is unhappy quickly :)  This communication is welcome and really fun to see.
  • Our great day was topped off with a great family play time for the 4 kids in our room following our all day adventure in the city.
  • Upon our return, we learned that our desire to visit her orphanage has been granted...praise God!  We will travel to Shenzhen tomorrow (about a 2-3 hr drive).  While will not take Fei back to the orphanage, the entire group will travel and Chris and Fei will go to a park or a Starbucks while the rest of the group tours, meets the staff, and hopefully takes pictures and video.  Our prayer is for great info for Fei and a life impacting experience for our travel group.

Shopping, kisses from Mom & live eels in a bin, imagine the excitement from a family that thinks dead scorpions in a freezer are cool.

  Lunch at Lucy's

Hanging out in the room

Ellie with her worker friend...imagine trying to explain that your daughter is stuck in the bathroom in ChinEnglish.

Sisters and their toys!

Fei will now let the grandparents get closer than 10 feet :) what fun.
